In some missions, enemies will attack you, and you can watch them come in the campaign map, as a little icon. In each barracks, 3 "legions" of soldiers can be gathered, and have 30 men and a commander (not the historical 8000, but.), so you can have 9 legions all together, (by memory). With these, you can either have javelin throwers or legionairres. The limit of the military aspect is having a limit of 3 'forts', big, chunky, walled complexes, and having a production of swords and/or javelins. It does have a military aspect to it, and this can be enjoyable to an extent.

Build long, stretching aqueducts across your town, create a main-street, decorate with flowers and statues. There are various tricks to make victory easier, but this game is not so much about winning, as it is for enjoying the game. It is novel with an intricate, detailed look inside Roman life, and in certain scenarios (such as the last one, which is great! ) it can look very effective a metropolis surrounded by slums.

It is enjoyable to play the campaign, especially one of, or the, last mission, as it is getting very difficult.īy memory, there isn't a time-line, or much of one, and you must get x people to y leveled accomodation, while not going bankrupt. It will give you fun with the campaigns, fun with the King-Maker, and most importantly, fun with multiplayer.Īs for CivCity, it is mostly an economic game, a somewhat difficult puzzle game, having to give your populace everything that they want water, wine, beds, oil, meat, clothes, flowers, slaves, temple-access, school-access, etc. I only played a for a limited while, due to errors with my ancient PC, but what I did play was very enjoyable.įor me, Stronghold 2 has a great re-playability factor, dwarfed only by Stronghold 1 and Crusader, however, if you have the first 3, then SHL is just asking to be bought. It has a nice selection of units, although the bats and dragons do get tedious. It has some unique features like a buy/sell feature in all production building for their respective resources/goods, as well as an autobuy/autosell feature in the marketplace. It can be compared to SH2 in regards to graphics and certain aspects of gameplay, but as stated above, it takes a different approach, that of military-based medieval fantasy life.

Stronghold Legends is a unique game to itself. Well, I can make a somewhat informed decision here. There are several others I could have mentioned but, in general, if you stick to maps that have higher ratings from multiple reviewers, you should have plenty to keep you busy. If you like constant, fast action and lean toward shorter games, then I wouldn't recommend mine.
FANTASY MEDIEVAL BUILDING GAMES LIKE STRONGHOLD SERIES
My own "Altar" series could appeal to you, depending upon your definition of "boring." I try to combine lots of different elements into my maps-great scenery, puzzle-solving, economics, skirmishes and all-out battles-so they usually take a fairly long time to play.

HorseArcher06 & Sir MichaelP ("The Chronicles of To Be A King"/"The Grey Monk"/the "Ring of Brodgar" series) Stratego (peace scenarios, many of which still have a fair share of combat) Gordon Farrell ("The Illegitimate Son"/"Stamford Bridge"/"El Cid") Well, I guess it depends upon what you actually like in a map.Everyone will have their own ideas about what makes an entertaining map, but you could begin with anything by:
